Flaws in information management cost companies millions each year

Today, knowledge is the most important asset in most companies. And the knowledge worker - whose main tasks are to absorb, process and transform information to create value in the form of new as well as improved products and services - can perhaps be seen as the most important part of any value chain.

The fact that entire businesses are now based on transforming knowledge into value has, of course, contributed to the administrative work and the amount of information that must be handled, rapidly increasing throughout society. And the speed of the increasing amounts of information is also rising at a furious pace.

Hard-to-access information drives costs up and quality down

Today's requirements for information management mean great challenges for most companies. It is simply business-critical to be able to handle large amounts of digitized information in an efficient and secure way. But managing information volumes efficiently, securely and cost-effectively is not done easily.

A survey conducted by the analysis company IDC, shows that the prevailing information confusion costs enormous sums. Companies with 1,000 knowledge workers spend at least $ 2.5 - 3.5 million each year:

  • searching for information that does not exist
  • searching for, but not finding, information that exists
  • recreating information that already exists but cannot be found

Managing information efficiently is thereby important, but it is also necessary to make it available in order to benefit from employees' abilities. According to the same survey, Fortune 500 companies lose a whopping $ 12 billion each year on:

  • recreating intellectual work
  • employees not performing fully
  • employees not having access to existing knowledge in the business

This reflects how important it is for knowledge workers to have easy and fast access to the right information. No matter how much human capital in the form of knowledge, experience and creativity the employees possess, they cannot carry out their work in an efficient manner if they do not have access to the information they need.

Finally, we can conclude that there is information confusion in society. Not having modern and efficient workflows, which makes it easy to access the right information and promotes knowledge sharing and collaborations costs.
