How to achieve business benefits in your IT project

There are several factors that affect whether or not an IT project leads to greater business benefits – clear distribution of responsibility, specific goals and a proactive approach are just some of them. The key to a successful IT project is knowing what you want and gathering all the stakeholders around those common objectives. It's important to identify the success factors and how you go about applying them to your business and, above all, to create incentives for using them. Only then can the benefits be achieved.

Take maximum advantage of the benefits

IT development can lead to changes in ways of working and organizational responsibilities and must go hand in hand with changes in the business to allow you to take maximum advantage of the benefits. In other words, the planned benefits are change objectives for the business. Those who make decisions concerning IT changes are also responsible for developing the business.

How do you create a successful IT project?

  1. The pre-study must identify what works well presently and what needs to be improved/changed. What key results do you want to get out of the project? What are the critical success factors and what risks can you foresee in the execution? Be clear on the pre-requisites and don't under-estimate the challenges.

  2. Who will be responsible for taking the necessary action? Set up a project team and assign responsibility. Set a deadline, monitor on a regular basis and above all – cooperate.

  3. The management must be at the forefront of the implementation.

  4. Measure before, during and after the implementation. It's a good idea to measure both qualitative and quantitative benefits.

  5. To be successful, the IT project requires motivation and positive, committed employees. Don't forget to also engage the end users in the project. Start with the most positive employees and save the least positive for last. Let them be gradually persuaded.
